Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric encryption algorithm that was widely used in the past. However, due to its small key size and vulnerabilities, it has been replaced by more secure encryption algorithms like AES.
History
DES was developed in the 1970s and became a federal standard. However, its 56-bit key size became insufficient as computing power increased.

DES has been replaced by:
- 3DES: Triple DES with longer keys
- AES: Advanced Encryption Standard
